3D Structured Light Camera

3D Structured Light Camera

A 3D structured light camera is a high-precision optical sensing device that captures three-dimensional geometric information of target objects by projecting pre-designed structured light patterns and analyzing the deformed patterns reflected from the object surface.

Core Working Principle

  1. Pattern ProjectionThe projector module emits predefined structured light patterns, such as sinusoidal fringe patterns, binary coded patterns, or random dot patterns. These patterns are projected uniformly onto the surface of the measured object.
  2. Deformation CaptureWhen the structured light hits the object with uneven surfaces, the pattern will be distorted according to the object’s topography—closer areas cause smaller deformation, while farther or protruding areas lead to larger displacement of the pattern. The high-resolution image sensor (usually a CMOS or CCD camera) synchronously captures the deformed pattern.
  3. 3D ReconstructionThe built-in algorithm calculates the disparity between the projected original pattern and the captured deformed pattern. Combined with the calibrated internal and external parameters of the camera (including the baseline distance between the projector and the camera, focal length, etc.), the system uses triangulation principle to convert the 2D image coordinates into 3D spatial coordinates, thus generating a dense point cloud model of the object.

Key Features

  • High Precision: Achieves sub-millimeter level 3D measurement accuracy, suitable for scenarios requiring fine detection of object contours.
  • Fast Scanning Speed: Completes single-frame 3D data acquisition in milliseconds, supporting dynamic scanning of moving objects in some high-speed models.
  • Strong Environmental Adaptability: Compared with LiDAR, it has better performance in short-range scenarios and can work stably under moderate ambient light with the help of active light source projection.
  • Dense Point Cloud Output: Generates a complete and dense 3D point cloud, which can directly support subsequent applications such as 3D modeling, reverse engineering, and defect detection.
